New Hong Kong Airlines lai see collectibles to welcome Year of the Ox

The Hong Kong Airlines new lai see design features unique calligraphy styles seen in Hong Kong


Hong Kong Airlines today unveiled a brand new set of lai see collectibles to usher in the Year of the Ox. The lai see design features the mastery of brushes and strokes of four legendary calligraphy artisans, including Mr Yim Chiu Tong, Mr Au Yeung Cheong, Mr Yeung Kai and Mr Lee Kin Ming, whose works have contributed to the distinctive visual landscape of Hong Kong.


Each of these “Made in Hong Kong” lai see highlights the signature artistry of each artist. The lai see design is also specially immersed with elements of aviation and travel, to bring back happy memories of flying, an experience missed by many over the past year.


Hong Kong Airlines Vice President Louis Li said: “As a home-based carrier, we are always eager to promote local art and culture within our community and around the world. Traditional and neon signboards in Chinese calligraphy is unique to Hong Kong and we are delighted to feature the works of these talented artists to bring some festive joy over the Chinese New Year holidays.”

Yim Chiu Tong


Known as “Kui Wong” (plumber king), Yim Chiu Tong is a well-known plumber in Hong Kong. For decades, he has been marketing his plumbing business by hand-painted advertisements on public facilities around Hong Kong. His Chinese calligraphy characters in black or white has now became a signature font and a street graffiti unique to the city. The Hong Kong Airlines lai see collectibles features his graffiti-style characters and a wish for all things smooth in the Year of the Ox.



Au Yeung Cheong


Au Yeung Cheong is a sign painter and also known as the master of the Zan Script, which was used by royalty and scholars in the Tang Dynasty. As a signage veteran, his works can be found on over 1,500 signboards and light boxes around Hong Kong.  “I love travel” in his signature Chinese calligraphy is his one and only art piece and was specially designed to be printed on Hong Kong Airlines lai see.




Yeung Kai


A calligraphy master of Beiwei Script, his font was highly favoured among business owners for its dynamic strokes that exude confidence and power. The 82-year-old artisan is determined to keep his signature calligraphy alive as a unique form of cultural heritage in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Airlines lai see has printed his brushwork on a suitcase, and serves as a reminder of our eagerness to travel. 



Lee Kin Ming


No stranger to Hong Kong Airlines, Lee Kin Ming has been collaborating with the carrier on lai see designs for three consecutive years. He has inherited and digitalized over 5,000 Chinese calligraphy characters left by his father’s late business partner Li Hon, and created the Li Han Kong Kai font. The lai see features signboards in this unique font, and wishes all a nice trip when flying with Hong Kong Airlines.
