Hong Kong Airlines will launch a new service between Hong Kong and Lanzhou, Gansu Province, on 26 May. Operating once a week, this direct service will provide immense convenience for travellers and further strengthen connectivity between Hong Kong and the northwest region of the Mainland.

Lanzhou is the only provincial capital in China where the Yellow River flows directly through the city. Beyond serving as the political, economic, and cultural centre of Gansu Province, Lanzhou acts as a crucial bridge connecting the inland areas with the western regions. Historically, it has been a major commercial hub and a vital transport artery along the Silk Road, as well as one of the earliest Chinese cities to embrace modern industrial civilisation.

Lanzhou boasts a magnificent Yellow River scenic corridor, featuring renowned attractions such as the Yellow River Tower, Zhongshan Bridge, White Pagoda Mountain (Baitashan), Lanzhou Stele Forest, and the Yellow River Mother Sculpture. Furthermore, the city is celebrated for its diverse cultural and natural tourism resources, encompassing the Gansu Provincial Museum, Xiguan Mosque, Wuquan Mountain, Lanzhou Shuimo Danxia National Geological Park, Yaou International Building, and Zhangye Road Pedestrian Street. Naturally, visitors must not miss the highly authentic local flavours at the Zhengning Road Snack Night Market and the famous Lanzhou beef noodles. With its captivating charm, the city warmly invites travellers from Hong Kong and around the world to explore its wonders first-hand.

Hong Kong Airlines remains committed to providing passengers with a wider array of travel options. The launch of this new route will deliver a more convenient direct flight experience for both business and leisure travellers, further deepening exchanges between the two destinations. This initiative also actively responds to the Individual Visit Scheme vigorously promoted by the Hong Kong SAR Government. It will not only help attract more Mainland tourists to Hong Kong, but also facilitate their transit through the city to popular travel destinations across Southeast Asia, Australia, and North America, thereby consolidating Hong Kong’s status as an international aviation hub.

As a key planning area of the ‘Silk Road Economic Belt’, Lanzhou plays a pivotal role as a transport and transit hub for Central Europe, Central Asia, and South Asia, making it a highly promising destination under the Belt and Road Initiative. The new route perfectly aligns with Hong Kong Airlines’ current network strategy and will generate a synergistic effect with existing routes such as Xining and Hulunbuir. It is poised to play a significant role in fostering commercial ties and cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and inland cities along the Belt and Road.

Hong Kong Airlines welcomes and fully supports the aviation and tourism initiatives announced by the Chief Executive of the HKSAR Government in his 2024 Policy Address. These measures demonstrate the government's commitment to strengthening Hong Kong's position as an international aviation hub and driving economic growth by implementing policies to attract both passenger and cargo traffic.

The Policy Address highlights the completion of the three-runway system (3RS) by the Airport Authority Hong Kong this year, anticipated to increase the handling capacity of Hong Kong International Airport by 50% from 2035. This significant capacity boost will optimise flight operations, enhance airline efficiency, and elevate the overall passenger experience. Leveraging Hong Kong's unique geographical advantage connecting Mainland China and the rest of the world, the increased flight frequencies and route options will further enhance Hong Kong's attractiveness as a transit hub, facilitating the development of interline agreements and expanding international route networks.

We are particularly encouraged by the government’s emphasis on expanding Hong Kong's air network, supporting the development of new routes and increasing flight frequencies, with a particular focus on collaboration with Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) countries. The immediate relaxation of multiple-entry visa arrangements for ASEAN travellers will further diversify the visitor base.

Hong Kong Airlines is actively contributing to key national strategies such as the BRI and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) development by strategically expanding our presence in Western China and BRI countries. Since last year, we have launched new routes to destinations including Vientiane (Laos), Da Nang (Vietnam), Xining, and Dunhuang, strategically broadening our network coverage.

Furthermore, we are confident that the government's initiatives to promote local tourism will attract more visitors from around the globe. The expansion of the airport and the increased flight capacity will have a positive impact on the aviation industry. As a key player in Hong Kong's aviation landscape, Hong Kong Airlines remains committed to reinforcing Hong Kong's status as a leading international aviation hub. We will capitalise on the opportunities presented by the 3RS, expanding our fleet strategically to support the development of new routes, including long-haul international destinations.

Commencing this winter, we will increase flight frequencies to Seoul and Tokyo, with services to Seoul increasing to twice daily and Tokyo to five times daily. Flights to Sapporo, Hokkaido will also increase to a daily service. In addition to the launch of our Chiang Mai route in October, we will also be launching flights to Sendai in December and resuming services to Gold Coast, Australia in January next year, demonstrating our confidence in the future capacity afforded by the 3RS.

Hong Kong Airlines will continue to leverage our strengths and existing network across Mainland China and the region to facilitate enhanced connectivity within the GBA and between Hong Kong and other mainland cities. Simultaneously, we will actively explore new, commercially viable routes to deepen connections with BRI countries and international markets, fostering growth in international business and tourism.

Starting from 1 February 2023, Cannabidiol (CBD) will be placed under the same strict control as other dangerous drugs under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance (DDO).
