Checked Baggage

Here is everything you need to know about your checked baggage information when flying with Hong Kong Airlines.

When travelling, it is worth taking extra measures to secure your baggage and valuables.

How to pack for your flight?

  1. Use good quality baggage that lasts longer and can withstand fair wear and tear resulting from the normal rigor of transportation by air and by baggage handling systems.
  2. Pack your baggage properly and securely in suitable containers such as musical instruments in sturdy hard case, bicycles in strong and protective case, liquids and gels in plastic bags or water proof containers etc.
  3. Do not over pack and overweigh your baggage.
  4. Attach name tag(s) or card on the outside and inside of your baggage.
  5. Attach unique stickers, tape, or labels on your baggage to ease identification and avoid collection errors on arrival.
  6. Remove old destination tag.
  7. Ensure your baggage does not contain any dangerous goods. Please refer to our for prohibited items more information.
  8. Ensure your baggage is securely closed and locked where possible.
  9. Remove straps and protruding objects from your baggage before checking it in.

What not to pack in your checked baggage?

You are recommended to hand-carry the following items instead:

  1. Fragile or perishable items.
  2. Items of value, such as keys, artwork, cameras, money, jewelry, precious metals, silverware, medicines, drug, dangerous goods, commercial goods or samples, personal electronic devices and odd-sized articles and etc.
  3. Important documents, such as negotiable papers, securities, business documents, passports and other identification documents and etc.

    Note:

    For any passenger who purchased prepaid excess baggage (PEB) through Hong Kong Airlines official website, Hong Kong Airlines mobile APP, WeChat, Hong Kong Airlines Call Centre on HX operating flights, free checked baggage allowance will be referenced to the terms and conditions of prepaid excess baggage (PEB) issued separately.

    Each passenger could purchase up to total maximum 60KG (≤ 60KG) baggage allowance including standard free checked baggage allowance, and all standard free checked baggage and prepaid excess baggage could be limited to maximum 2 pieces. FWC membership privilege is excluded in calculation.

    Note:

    • Excess baggage is charged per passenger and per direction.
    • Excess baggage is charged in USD. For other currencies, it is subject to currency fluctuation and will be updated each month.
    • Both credit card and cash payments are accepted. Cash payments are only accepted in HKD, CNY, USD and the local currency of destination (except Indonesian Rupiah, Philippine Peso and Vietnam Dong).
    • The maximum weight and dimensions of any single piece of checked baggage should not be over 32kg (70lb) and 203cm / 80in (Length + Width + Height) respectively. Baggage over the limits must be repacked or split into lighter units; otherwise will not be accepted for carriage.
    • Oversized and overweight items will be accepted subject to the availability of the aircraft on the specific flight/day of departure.
    • Mobility Aids like wheelchair that are carried by the passenger can be accepted without charge as in addition to the baggage allowance.
    • Any baggage that exceeds the free checked baggage allowance will be levied at the airport.  
    • This policy is for HX operating flights only (exclude codeshare flight operated by OZ/HU/CN)

    • For through journeys where the passenger travels partly on business class and partly on economy class, the free baggage allowance for each portion of travel shall be granted according to each purchased ticket class.
    • Where a passenger who has paid the business class fare travels on Economy class, the free baggage allowance shall be given based on that for the Business class service respectively.

    ·         Passengers should provide the weight and dimensions of baggage in order to check if cargo compartment space is available at the time of booking.

    ·         Excessive weight will be charged as normal overweight baggage .

    ·         Unrelated items should not put in the equipment packing

    ·         If no advance reservation was made, Bicycle / Surfboard Equipment / Windsurfing Equipment will be treated as standby baggage.

    ·         No compensation will be given to passengers whose Bicycle / Surfboard Equipment / Windsurfing Equipment is offloaded due to cargo capacity issue.

    ·         In case of any disputes, Hong Kong Airlines' decision shall be final.

    Surfboards / Windsurfing equipment

    Regardless of the actual dimension, the equipment may be considered as a piece of baggage at 203 cm/80 in

       • Surfboards are allowed up to two boards per bag.

       • Windsurfing Equipment including one board and one mast, wooden boom and sail.

       • Windsurfing equipment must be padded and enclosed in a suitable package sufficient to protect

     

    Regardless of the actual dimension, following types of sport equipment will be considered as a piece of baggage at 158 cm/62 in.

    Hockey / Lacrosse Equipment

       • Hockey (e.g. field hockey/ice hockey), ringette, lacrosse and football equipment: helmet, a puck/ring/football/stick, a set of pads, and a pair of cleats, shoes or skates are included as part of one accepted set, per guest.

       • One equipment bag and a maximum of two sticks taped together will be counted as one piece of checked baggage.

       • Hockey sticks must be packed separately from hockey equipment in a hard-sided container or sporting bag.

    Golf Equipment

    Pre-advise at the time of booking.

    If travelling in a group of 10 or more people carrying golf set, pre-advise at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled departure time.

       • Including 14 clubs, 12 golf balls, and a pair of golf shoes.

       • The golf bag must be covered or enclosed in a heavy, rigid carrying case.

       • All items must be properly encased in a suitable container at the time of check-in.

    Scuba Diving Equipment

    Pre-advise at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled departure time

    •   Including one empty scuba tank, one scuba regulator, one tank harness, one tank pressure gauge, mask, fins, snorkel and safety vest.

    •   All items must be properly encased in a suitable container at the time of check-in.

    •   Gas vessels must be fully depressurized for carrying.

     

    Ski & Water Ski Equipment

       • Including ski boot, ski poles, one snow board; one pair of standard water skis or slalom water ski.

       • Equipment must be securely encased in a suitable container at the time of check-in.

    ·         Passengers should provide the weight and dimensions of baggage in order to check if cargo compartment space is available at the time of booking

    ·         If no advance reservation was made, Ski & Water Ski Equipment will be treated as standby baggage.

       

    Travelling with Pets 

    Flights departing from Hong Kong

    (Pet transported in a pressurised section of the cargo hold of the aircraft service is temporarily suspended for flights to Mainland China)

    In accordance with the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department, with the exception of assistance dogs, passengers are not permitted to bring pets or animals of any description into the main passenger cabin of an aircraft.

    Hong Kong Airlines accepts domestic cats and dogs* which will be transported in a pressurised section of the cargo hold of the aircraft. Passengers travelling with pets (domestic cats and dogs only) are responsible for providing all documents required by local government authorities (i.e. health certificate and travel permits for the pets).

    Flights arriving into Hong Kong

    Pets or animals (domestic dogs and cats only*) intended for importation into Hong Kong are not permitted to be transported as checked or cabin baggage and must be carried as manifested cargo. For more details, please contact one of our Cargo Sales Offices.

    For Hong Kong regulatory information regarding live animal trans[portation, please refer to Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.

     We recommend you check with the local government office for all documentation requirements (i.e. health certificates and travel permits). For import/export/transit regulations of a particular country, please refer to IATA Travel Centre (Choose your destination from the dropdown list under Customs, Currency & Airport information Section) and IATA Traveller's Pets Corner . 

      

    *Due to legal regulations and possible health risks, brachycephalic (snub-nosed, short snout or flat face) cats and dogs are not accepted by Hong Kong Airlines. Please contact our customer service center to confirm the acceptance of your pet.

      

    Preparations for Travelling with Pets 

      

    Please contact our customer service center at least 7 days before departure to confirm the acceptance of your pet.

    You will be asked to provide the following information by email or fax when making your reservation:

    1. Type and number of pet(s)
    2. Dimensions of the pet container
    3. Material and make of the pet container (i.e. solid fiberglass, rigid plastic or metal with strong weld metal mesh which has sufficient ventilation pores)
    4. Total weight of the pet and its container
    5. Valid health and vaccination certificates, microchip, entry permits and other documents required by the country of entry or transit (please check IATA Travel Centre under Customs, Currency & Airport information Section for reference)  
    • You should prepare your own pet container which must be of suitable size for your pet. \

    • Please note the following limitations on the number of pets / pet containers that can be carried on different aircraft types. Pets will be carried on a first come first served basis:

    • You must provide sufficient food and water before check-in, as your pet cannot be fed during the flight
    • You must prepare all of the travel documents in original version and arrive at the airport and check-in at least 2 hours before departure
    • Free checked baggage allowance is not applicable to pets and animals and they are subject to excess baggage charges.

      

    Hong Kong Airlines are not responsible for any loss, sickness, injury or death of animals during transportation unless the claims are arising out of our proven negligence or wilful misconduct.

  • Different countries have their local customs requirements for importing food items into the countries. You are advised to check with the relevant authorities of the country you are travelling to if you plan to carry food items in your cabin or checked baggage.

     

    Japan

    According to the Important Notification from Animal Quarantine Service, beginning 22ndApril 2019

    Penalty for violation against the Act on Domestic Animal Infectious Diseases Control will be applied more stringently for introduction of meat products. Regardless of whether it is abandoned

    voluntarily, AQS will cope rigorously with the illegal introduction of meat product

    lIt is subject to a penalty in case of confirmation of livestock products such as meat products without import declaration in passenger baggage.

    lInspection may require certain time for officers to record the information of passport and boarding pass.

    On 1stJuly 2020, the amendment of the Act on Domestic Animal Infectious Disease Control comes into force, then the punishments change to, In case of introducing livestock products without passing import inspection, persons shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of up to 3 years or a fine of up to 3 million yen (up to 50 million yen for businesses). Please refer to Animal Quarantine Service

    Meals Ready to Eat (M.R.E) and self-heating meals

    The heating pack of Meals Ready to Eat (M.R.E) and self-heating meals must be removed before onboard our aircraft, in either carry-on or checked baggage.

     

    Fruit

    Fruit can be carried into the cabin as long as the hand-carry is within our cabin baggage limitation or carried as checked baggage. 

    Durian and jackfruit are universally banned in aircraft cabin and not allowed in checked baggage.

      

    Seafood, meat and frozen products

    Seafood, meat and frozen products can only be carried as checked baggage. It¡¯s your responsibility to make sure you comply with any quarantine restrictions and take relevant liability if you¡¯re transporting seafood, meat or frozen products as checked baggage.

    You must pack any seafood, meat and frozen products according to the following requirements:

    1. Seafood, meat and frozen products must be completely frozen and keep in a container that will keep the products frozen;
    2. All seafood, meat and frozen products must be sealed and double wrapped in plastic to prevent any possible leaking during the flight.
  • Hair Curlers / Curling Irons

     

    According to the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau, there is a new restriction on the carriage of hair curlers or curling irons.

     

    If the lithium ion batteries are removed from the body, the carriage is permitted as carry-on or checked baggage. The removed batteries from the body and the spare batteries can be carried in a carry-on baggage only given that the lithium ion battery shall never exceed 160Wh. Otherwise, they are not allowed to be carried by air transportation.

     

    However, for socket type curlers, battery-powered (excluding powered by lithium battery) are not categorized into dangerous goods and there is no restriction on the carriage of these devices. For gas type curlers, carriage is allowed given that the safety cover must securely fitted over the heating part as they contain a hydrocarbon gas.

For Baggage Allowance and Extra Baggage Charges for multi-sector journey involving various airlines

 

For interline connection involving two or more airlines, the Most Significant Carrier (MSC) i.e. the carrier providing the long haul journey or longest mileage will dominate the free checked baggage allowance for the entire journey.

When stopover(s) is /are made, the free checked baggage allowance of individual carriers will apply for their respective sectors.
